Questions people often ask

Is this the right kind of help for me?
I work with everyday struggles that are hard to carry, like stress, burnout, anxiety, loneliness and big changes. If you need more specialised or intensive care, I'll tell you honestly and point you towards the right kind of help. The free intro call is a good way to check.
Is this the same as therapy?
In everyday language, yes, it’s very similar: we meet regularly, talk through what’s going on, and work on what you’d like to change. Formally, it’s called psychological counselling. I’m a psychologist registered with the Nederlands Instituut van Psychologen (NIP), trained in neuropsychology and sport and exercise psychology, and I follow the NIP’s code of ethics, including its rules on confidentiality.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you can contact me directly. You don't need to be registered with a huisarts to work with me, though it's a good idea to have one while you live here.
How do I book?
Send me a message through the contact form. I'll reply within two working days to arrange a free intro call or a first session.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is mainly about getting to know what's going on for you. I'll ask some questions about what brought you here, your situation and what you'd like to change, and you steer how much you go into. By the end we'll have a first sense of what to work on and whether we're a good fit, and you decide whether to carry on. There's nothing to prepare.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on you and what you want to work on. Some people come for a handful of sessions, others for longer. We review how it's going together, and you can stop at any time. There’s no fixed commitment: we book one session at a time.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes. What you share stays between us, and your university or employer won't know you're seeing me unless you tell them. The only exception is a rare situation where someone's safety is at serious risk, and I'd try to talk it through with you first.
Do I have to be a student or an expat?
No. My practice is built around people living away from home, but anyone is welcome. Sessions are in English.
Can I have sessions while I'm abroad?
Yes. If you're travelling or living outside the Netherlands for a while, we can still meet online. Before we start, we'll agree where you'd turn for urgent support where you are, and I'll ask you to have a local doctor (GP) you could see in person if needed. I'm based in the Netherlands, so my knowledge of healthcare systems elsewhere is limited, and I can't arrange in-person care abroad. Rules can differ between countries, so tell me where you'll be and we'll check it works.
Will I get an invoice?
Yes, you'll get one for every session. You can send it to your insurer if your policy covers psychological support.
Can my employer, university or insurance pay for it?
Basic Dutch insurance doesn’t cover sessions, but some supplementary policies and employer wellbeing budgets do reimburse part of the cost. You’ll get an invoice for each session, which you can submit yourself. It’s worth checking with your insurer or HR first.
What do I need for an online session?
A quiet, private space where you won’t be overheard, a laptop or phone with a stable internet connection, and ideally headphones. I’ll send you a secure video link before each session, so there’s nothing to install.
Have a question, or want to request a free intro call?
Send me a message and I'll reply within two working days.
